The hidden dissonance in our everyday lives
Almost all of us know the feeling of being exhausted at the end of a busy day, yet still having that nagging feeling that we haven't done what's really important. This unease is no coincidence—it's the result of a discrepancy between what we do and what really matters to us.
In today's world, we are constantly driven by urgent matters. Notifications, requests, and appointments dictate our pace. In the process, we easily lose sight of the big picture—our actual values and life goals. Time is life, and if we don't align our time with our values, we ultimately don't live our own lives.
The Values-Time Compass
Imagine your values as an inner compass. It shows you the direction you are heading in. How you actually use your time, on the other hand, is the path you are actually taking. When the direction of the compass and the actual path diverge, inner turmoil and dissatisfaction arise.
The challenge is that although we often know our values, we lose sight of them in everyday life. We react to external stimuli instead of acting consciously. Yet time is our most important asset—irreplaceable and finite.
The value-time matrix
In order to align your time with your values, an important first step is to take an honest inventory. The following exercise can help you with this:
- Identify your core values: What is truly important to you in life? Family, health, professional fulfilment, personal growth, social contribution?
- Analyze how you currently spend your time: Keep a time diary for a week. Write down how you spend your hours.
- Make connections: Assign each activity to one of your core values—or none, if it doesn't contribute to any of them.
- Recognize discrepancies: Where are you investing a lot of time without serving your most important values? Where are core values being neglected?
This analysis often reveals surprising insights. Some people discover that they spend 80% of their waking hours on activities that only serve 20% of their core values—while central values in life are hardly given any time at all.
The art of value-time synchronization
Aligning your time with your values is not a one-time project, but an ongoing process. Here are some concrete steps that can help you do this:
- Prioritize consciously: Plan your weeks and days based on your values, not just external demands.
- Establish rituals: Create fixed periods of time for value-oriented activities—be it family evenings, meditation, or time for creative projects.
- Practice saying no consciously: Learn to decline requests and commitments that do not contribute to your core values.
- Check regularly: Take time each month to reflect on whether your use of time is consistent with your values.
The deeper meaning of time orientation
When we align our time with our values, we gain more than just efficiency. We achieve inner coherence—the satisfying feeling that our actions are consistent with our being. This congruence is an essential source of quality of life and a sense of meaning.
Our perception of time changes fundamentally: instead of being driven by external demands, we experience our time as self-determined and meaningfully invested. The clock becomes a companion rather than a pacemaker, helping us to shape our lives according to our own standards.
Your personal Align Time impulse
Reflection question: How can you tell that your time management fits your values?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, but typical signs include a feeling of inner peace and contentment at the end of the day, less procrastination when it comes to important tasks, and greater presence in the moment.
Practical implementation for the coming week:
- Take 20 minutes and write down your three most important values in life.
- Review your calendar for the coming week: Which appointments and activities support these values, and which do not?
- Set at least one “value anchor” per day—an activity that directly serves one of your core values.
- Observe at the end of the week: Has your perception of time changed?
Time is life. When you align your time with your values, you not only live more efficiently, but also more authentically and fulfilled. Our Your Time concept aims to support you in recognizing and using your time for what it truly is: your most valuable asset.
