Less is more: why simplicity is a real luxury today

A race through time - which humans cannot win

Never before has knowledge been as ubiquitous, available and fast-moving as it is today. Our everyday lives are literally flooded with data, information and technological innovations. Whereas the world's knowledge used to double over centuries, today this happens in less than two years - in some specialist areas even within days. At the same time, the human brain, our central organ of perception and processing, remains virtually unchanged biologically.

An evolutionary relic that is optimized for a world that no longer exists.

The gap between input and processing

This ever-increasing discrepancy between available knowledge and processable knowledge is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Our brains are simply not designed to process thousands of stimuli every day, to differentiate between important and irrelevant, and to maintain inner calm at the same time.

The constant stream of information, notifications and decisions is increasingly leading to excessive demands, stress and inner turmoil, and what falls by the wayside are moments of leisure and conscious experience. The feeling of losing control over one's own life is becoming increasingly widespread. More and more people experience themselves as being driven, as passive cogs in a complex machine whose speed they can neither determine nor fully comprehend.

A return to simplicity - a human need

In the midst of this sensory overload, a quiet but constant longing is growing: for simplification. For clarity. For an antithesis to complexity. Because complexity creates stress. However, humans are programmed by nature to avoid stress. The return to the essentials, to clear structures and comprehensible functions, is more than just a nostalgic phenomenon. Products, processes and technologies that are easy to use and take the burden off people instead of adding to it are therefore becoming increasingly important. They create orientation, trust and - most importantly - a feeling of control and self-determination.

Professional product design as the answer to an overly complex world

In an age in which many things are technically brilliant, but overtaxing in human terms, design takes on a special significance. Not as mere surface cosmetics, but as a structuring principle. Excellent design reduces complexity, turns technology into a tool rather than a purpose in itself - and puts people back at the center of things, which is precisely the philosophy of BOTTA. As a design studio and watch manufacturer, we see it as our task to develop products that are not only functionally convincing, but also relieve people - emotionally and cognitively.

Our watches are not technical gadgets, but pleasantly clear time instruments. They put people above technology again. Their design is not loud, but clear and precise. Not trend-driven, but technically and creatively durable.

BOTTA watches - islands of clarity

Our wrist and wall clocks follow a simple principle: form follows function - but with emotion and empathy. At first glance, they may seem unusual, perhaps even irritatingly minimalist. But this is precisely where their strength lies. Their logic is intuitive. They require no training, no explanation - they make everyday life easier and give the wearer a bit of clarity, a bit of peace. BOTTA watches are therefore far more than just timepieces. They are a statement for a more conscious life, for an appreciation of the essentials, for the courage to reduce. Furthermore, they are the quiet luxury of a world that puts people back at the center.

Conclusion: simplicity is the new luxury

We live in a time in which everything seems to be possible - and that is precisely what is becoming a burden for many. Those who succeed in creating orientation, clarity and calm in this world deliver more than just a product. They create relevance. They provide stability. This is precisely our claim at BOTTA. Our watches are therefore not off-the-peg products, but manifestations of a new way of thinking: less, but better.

    Lieber Herr Botta,
